David Lewis Gedge und seine semi-legendäre Band feiern im Dezember dieses Jahres ein besonderes Jubiläum mit 8 Live-Auftritten in Deutschland.
The Wedding Present wurde 1985 in Leeds gegründet. Die Band entstand aus der Asche einer Band namens The Lost Pandas und wurde von David Gedge [Vocals / Gitarre] und Keith Gregory [Bass] gegründet, als sie die Dienste von Peter Solowka [Gitarre] und Shaun Charman [Schlagzeug] in Anspruch nahmen.
Die erste Single der Band - „Go Out And Get 'Em, Boy!“ - wurde im Mai 1985 veröffentlicht und trägt den gleichen Titel wie der erste Band von Davids Autobiografie, in der er die Anfangszeiten beschreibt, als er in und um Leeds spielte.
Seit 1985 hatten The Wedding Present achtzehn Top-40-Hitsingles in Großbritannien; nicht schlecht für eine Gruppe, die sich von Anfang an hartnäckig geweigert hat, das Spiel der Plattenindustrie mitzuspielen. Dieser Pioniergeist ist seit jeher der Kern der Bandphilosophie. Seit dem Album George Best [„an unmitigated delight“ (NME)] ist die Band immer ihren eigenen, wenn auch oft exzentrischen Weg gegangen.
Die Band plant mehrere Events [darunter ein Musical!], um ihr 40-jähriges Bestehen zu feiern, unter anderem diese ausgedehnte Tournee, die im Oktober schon in Großbritannien losgeht. Bei diesen Konzerten wird die Band Stücke aus ihrem umfangreichen Repertoire spielen.
